ELVIS INTERVIEWS BY JOE KREIN

LARRY GELLER

Audio one

THE FOLLOWING WAS A PHONE INTERVIEW WITH LARRY GELLER , IT TOOK PLACE OVER SEVERAL MONTHS and is constantly being added to.

JOE KREIN : I know you first met Elvis when you were a kid in High School. You went to a concert . did you ever remind him that you had met and where?

LARRY GELLER : certainly. years later. but it was no big thing. we laughed. it was a giggle. he could never remember me. a million people in his life time. i told him. he remembered that Concert . because that was a very rememarable thing. George Klein was there. Probably Red as well. but the millions of people he met in life, he would not remember little ole me. (laughing)

Can you tell me anything about death threats against Elvis?

There was this one time
in Florida, and they had some; rent a cops ; guarding the front of the
stage .One night this guy rushed the front of the stage with a knife, and a cop
put his hand out and the knife went right through his hand. I can't tell you how
many times we would be in a auditorium ,Elvis would not know what was going on.
But the bomb squad was there and they would be dressed in these black jump
suits. They would also have black caps on , they would be under the seats
searching for bombs. Because death threats would be coming in all the time.

I remember one night we
were in another place in Florida , we left the auditorium and i look up and
there were these men; on the roof. what looked like SWAT teams .

And you and Elvis had no idea they were there?

well we new there was a
bomb threat ,but these guys were also on the out side roof of the building with
sniper rifles protecting Elvis while he was walking to the limo. that happened
several times.

One time in Pittsburgh
on New Years Eve , it was viscously cold.; This was 1976 ,and it was way
below zero and Vernon was on tour with us. Elvis said ;lets just get out of
here;. We did the show and we went back to the hotel and i remember that night
,I was sitting in his room. the phone rings it was like 2 in the morning. Elvis
said ;pick up the phone; The voice said can I speak to Elvis please? I said sure
who's calling? He said ;its Jimmy Carter .I said come on ;who the hell is this?
stop messing around.

laughing

It was Jimmy Carter.

Your kidding! It was the President?

Elvis says give me that ,it is the president I was expecting his call. I for got
to tell you. So this was like December; 31 before he was in office but he
was the president elect. So I felt really foolish. So ok it was like real early
in the morning it was extremely cold and Elvis said my daddy's here and he does
not feel well. Lets get the hell out of here ,get the plane cranked up . So we
packed up everything . So one came and got all of Elvis' things and we went to
the airport . We got on the plane and it was freeeezzzzing! all of a sudden and
the tower called the cockpit ,Elwood Davis was the pilot. Got two bomb threats
here ,you guys cant leave its not safe. The plane needs to be cleared. So you
cant take off , unless you sign a waver. absolving us from any responsibility .
Otherwise you guys cant leave. not until its checked by the FBI and a this and a
that! which would have taken hours and hours. So Joe Esposito says to hell with
this let me sign it ,don't tell Elvis. So he went to the tower and signed it. so
we took off ,
So a bomb threat means. if there is a bomb on the plane it is going to go off in 3 or 4 minutes.

really?

yes , so that's what we
were always told . So when we took off ,and everybody is looking at each and
other . Guessed if it had happened we would not even know it. it would happen so
quickly . Joe said its probably some fan , these things happen. And it did a
lot. Bomb threats would come in , bomb threats to the auditorium . I was asked
to go to London to give a talk. This was after Elvis had died. It was for Elvis'
birthday. Before i got on the stage and there were several hundred people there.
The promoter came up to me and said ;Larry we just received this and its a note
from the IRA;. saying if this man speaks tonight a bomb is going to go off. So I
had to make a decision. I sad well the hell with it, remembering about the time
with Elvis.

But anyway those things happened a lot with Elvis ,and the thing of  it is?
you never ever know. That's why the old saying is a once of precaution .

Plus you know the famous story in Vegas . I came in kind of late and got to Elvis;
suite and Elvis comes running up to me with a 38!He said put this under your jacket
man there are some problems. There might be trouble tonight.

What happened was down stairs colonel Parker had these stands  were they sold
posters and hats and all that fan stuff. someone had sent up a Elvis poster from the
souvenir stand with a bulls eye written on it. Saying Elvis was going to be shot
tonight! So Baron Hilton came up to the suite and sad Elvis you don't have to go on
tonight.

Elvis says no way Mr. Hilton ,there's no way that I am not going to go on. If
there is really someone who really wants to get me and if its not going to be
tonight or the next night. if they really want to get me ,there nothing that we
can do about it. I have to go on. They then said well they have these bullet
proof vests you can wear. Elvis said i cant wear one of those things ,I am
already wearing a jump suit ! No I won't be able to move properly . so that
night in the back of the room; of the Hilton. There were these guys and
they look just like they do in the movies, black suits and dark glasses and the
thing in there ear. Plus there were 2 ambulances waiting just in case.

One other time Elvis was on stage , and four guys jump the stage . They planned it.
They came up on the stage at different angles and within five seconds they were
being thrown off the stage on to the tables and the audience was clapping.
They thought it was a part of the show . They figured it was some kind of gag or something,
but they were taken straight to jail.

So was Sonny and Red and Dick in the middle of this?
And how good were they at doing there job protecting Elvis?

You know they were bad guys. they were rough. plus the last year of Elvis's life . they had ed parker on the crew. when that man walked in the room you could feel it, this guy had an energy about him. he was like an animal. he had such power. with he with all of his adeptness. he with all of his black belts . this guy worked with Bruce Lee. Ed had knives on him. nothing ever happened. but he was there. but you never ever new. case in point. John Lennon

i was just going to say it.

right he didn't have any security. but New York is a very different trip. you know people think California is laid back. but when it comes to celebrity's in New York . they walk around. they like it there because they could do that. but you never ever know.  .

because of the death threats . did that make Elvis paranoid?

No Elvis was fearless. That stuff didn't bother him at all. he new he had a crack staff with him, where ever we went we hired even more security. you couldn't come on our floor at the hotel. There were cops stationed at the elevator. You couldn't get off the elevator. People tried.

so he new that he was protected . when Kennedy was assassinated. i came on the scene right after that. Wow man that was really on his mind.

Really?

we would read things . the gem stone files . it was about who did it. we read everything we could get on it.

so it did make him a little Paranoid.

a little , but not much. but the Kennedy thing he was very interested in.

so I got a copy of the Gem Stone files through a friend . and I gave it to Elvis. He loved that book. he read and reread it. but in the terms of that . in the sixties it was love and drugs. he didn't have to have security. no one needed security in the 60,s. Elvis did because Elvis was a notch above super star. He was Elvis . He was in a category by himself. So where ever he was , Red was there  and Sonny and Dick and or Ed was there.

in the 70s things started to change.

that's to bad.

it is to bad. its to bad for our World.

What did you think of Colonel Parker ?

Joe let me tell you a story. At the very end , I mean the last four or five months. Elvis was progressively getting sicker and it was quite obvious. It was obvious to the fans . the media to a lot of people.  We were in Maine. Elvis was in his bedroom. I was sitting in the adjoining room. The Colonel came in one day and walked straight into Elvis's bedroom. He never did that before. ever. Elvis was in a comatose state. he was having his head dunked into a bucket of ice water  , they were trying to revive him from the night before. The colonel saw it first hand. I was there! I saw what the colonel saw. Elvis was moaning . aaaaaahhhhhh

About a minute and half later the colonel came out. He walked up to me and said. The only thing that is important now is that man is on the stage tonight. Nothing else matters! nothing! who in the right mind? here was the guy who had the power. he was the one who could have put Elvis in a hospital ,right then and there.

Elvis was for real , and he had a heart and a soul .

But if the colonel was that great of a genius and a business man. Why would he kill the golden goose? Why didn't he call a doctor? I mean I know what i would have done , if I was Colonel Parker. I the man who demands all the tours and  gets 50 percent of all the money.

But have him on the stage tonight ! is all he said.

I said . oh my God ! What about Elvis?

Elvis called me in the room afterwards. He said why the hell did you let him in my room while i was like that? I said Elvis the guy walked right in , what am i going to do? He said this is my room! This is my Ball game.

you know there was so much more I could have put in my first book. But how big can a book be? I mean this went on for 45 minutes. cussing and yelling! swearing about Colonel Parker and the type of person he was.

But Elvis was the first to say . Hey this is the guy who launched my career. he's a genius! The guy knows marketing ,he did it.

But some where he lost touch. Along the way he lost touch. He made a lot of enemies in Hollywood.     No one in Hollywood liked Colonel Parker. None of the studio heads , none of the guys who made the deals. They didn't like him! They new where he was from, he was a Carney.

Elvis was absolutely was going to get rid of him! Plus some other people as well.

Do you think we could have saved him ? or do you think he was to far gone?

If he would have gotten rid of the colonel back in Maine. If he would have done that, and if he had gotten someone responsible. If that person would have said. Elvis great! I'm going to plan your career now a whole new way . but! You got to get healthy son! You got to get healthy! Now!

you there Joe?

Yes i am just so blown away. I mean I loved Elvis. You loved Elvis. Elvis loved you.

I still do . I think about him and I still cry.

 (Larry's voice is extremely emotional)

Last night i was sitting on my couch , the lights were off. I was thinking about Elvis , and what had happened. it just blows me away. because it ended up like a Greek tragedy!

and that's the truth. This guy had thee career in the history of show business! No ones a greater star then Elvis. No one touched people more then him .

more books have been written about Elvis then any movie star ,Rock star , politician , in American history. More people go to Graceland then any other home in America. Now it used to be the White House , but since 911 ,they don't do tours anymore. In fortune magazine. In the dead rock star category. Elvis made $450.0000 dollars .So he is the greatest star ever!

in your book you say you said to Elvis . "your killing yourself Elvis!

That's right. I said Elvis i love you and your life is on the line! He new it! he recognized it!

Do you think he didn't want to?

No No No ! let me tell you something, it took a long time before he woke up to the bitter reality of his life, but he woke up! That's the point. In 1977, the year that he died , and this is over a series of conversations that we had. He said man I know why some of these guys are here. There not my real friends man. There here for a pay check. There's only two or three guys that i consider my friends . I am going to get rid of X , Y AND Z ! he was going to get rid a whole bunch of guys. He said i know my life is on the line. I know what i have to do man. I know its not going to be easy.

You must have been so happy to hear it?

I was thrilled! We had a house picked out in Hawaii. we new where we were going to go. He was going to quite for a year , or what ever time it took. To get his life , his health back. Hew was going to get off of all the prescriptions , he was going to start eating correctly. Exercise , no doctors . he new he did not need a doctor. he just kept one around so he could get prescription! THEN HE WAS GOING TO RE ENTER HOLLYWOOD AS AN ACTOR AND THAT IS THE TRUTH.

LARRY I ASKED SHAUN NEILSON , AT THE END OF ELVIS'S LIFE WHO WAS CLOSE TO ELVIS?

HE SAID ONE HUNDRED PERCENT LARRY GELLER

I SAID LARRY WAS CLOSE?

OH YES LARRY DID A LOT FOR ELVIS.

YOU KNOW SHAUN IS A DECENT GUY ,BUT SHAUN AND SOME OF THE OTHERS DIDN'T HAVE AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH ELVIS. THEY WERE EITHER IN THERE HOTEL WHICH WASN'T OURS OR ON ANOTHER FLOOR. BUT ELVIS RESPECTED HIS VOICE AND HE WANTED HIM ON STAGE WITH HIM. BUT IN TERMS OF PEOPLE THAT HUNG OUT WITH ELVIS WE WERE THE GUYS THAT DID.

BUT HE KNEW THAT YOU TOOK CARE OF HIM

IN ANY RATE , I SAY THAT COLONEL PARKER WAS A MARKETING GENIUS , HE LAUNCHED ELVIS'S CAREER AND HE DID LOSE TOUCH WITH WHAT WAS RIGHT FOR ELVIS. LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING , PROBABLY ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTING COUCHES IN AMERICAN HISTORY WAS LEE STRAUSBERG . HE STARTED THE ACTORS STUDIO , HE TAUGHT BRANDO , JAMES DEAN , ALL THE GREAT ACTORS . HE SAID ELVIS WAS ONE OF THE GREAT ACTORS AND WAS A GREAT TALENT. BUT HE KNEW DAM WELL THAT HE WASN'T BEING COUCHED PROPERLY , MANAGED PROPERLY . BUT HE RECOGNIZED THAT ELVIS WAS A GREAT ACTOR. HE HAD THAT QUALITY , THAT CERTAIN FACTOR THAT YOU WOULD FIND IN A BRANDO OR DEAN. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY MOVIES WERE OFFERED TO ELVIS?

NONE

ELVIS NEVER EVEN KNEW ABOUT THEM.

IT NEVER GOT THAT FAR?

NEVER GOT THAT FAR , SOME TERRIFIC MOVIES , AND THEY WANTED ELVIS. ELVIS NEW IT . HE WOULD SAY MAN THEY PACKAGED ME. HAL WALLIS AND COLONEL PARKER , AND I'M NOT BLAMING THEM. BECAUSE I TAKE RESPONSIBILITY . I SIGNED THE CONTRACTS , I MADE MONEY OFF THOSE MOVIES. BUT WHERE I WENT WRONG , IS THAT I BELIEVED THEM. THEY SAID TO ME , ELVIS WE WILL FIND YOU SOMETHING. DON'T WORRY THE FANS WANT TO HEAR YOU SING IN THE MOVIES. WE WILL FIND SOMETHING FOR YOU. MAN ALL I KNOW IS HAL WALLIS MAKES GI BLUES AND PARADISE HAWAIIAN STYLE . HE MAKES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS , HE TURNS AROUND AND MADE BECKIT WITH RICHARD BURTEN. HERE'S A GUY THAT MADE CASABLANCA , HERE'S A GUY THAT MADE FANTASTIC MOVIES. HE WAS A SMART MAN , BUT ELVIS SAID I BELIEVED THEM. I WENT ALONG AND THAT'S WHERE I WENT WRONG. BUT MAN I ONLY REGRET ONE THING , THAT IS I DIDN'T BECOME THE ACTOR THAT I KNOW I AM. I'M AN ACTOR! WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT'S ALL I WANTED TO BE . I WANTED TO BE A SINGER AND I WANTED TO BE AN ACTOR. HE SAID HE WOULD DAY DREAM ALL THE TIME. YOU KNOW ELVIS KNEW EVERYONE OF JAMES DEANS LINES IN HIS MOVIES. HE SAW THEM SO MANY TIME , ELVIS KNEW THEM BY HEART. HE RECOGNIZED THAT JAMES DEAN WAS A GREAT ACTOR AND THAT'S WHAT HE WANTED TO BE. MY ONLY REGRET . IF THEY WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME THAT CHANCE , THAT'S WHY HE GOT REALLY PISSED OFF AT COLONEL PARKER. WHEN HE BARGED IN ON HIM THAT DAY , AND HE SAID MAN THIS IS MY PRIVATE LIFE , HE SHOULDN'T DO THAT. HE IS SUPPOSE TO BE TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS AND HE IS NOT DOING THE RIGHT THING WITH ME. I KNOW IT , WHY DOESN'T HE FIND ME A MOVIE? ELVIS KEPT SAYING TO HIM OVER AND OVER AGAIN FIND ME A REAL MOVIE. HE ALSO TOLD HIM THAT HE WAS TIRED, ALL HE DID WAS TOUR AMERICA. I LOVE MY FANS , BUT WHAT ABOUT ME. HOW ABOUT MY FANS IN ENGLAND , GERMANY AND JAPAN? I WONDER WHAT THEY THINK OF ME , BECAUSE I DON'T COME AND SEE THEM? THE BEATLES COME HERE , BUT I CAN'T GO THERE?

DO YOU THINK HE WOULD HAVE CLEANED UP IF HE KNEW HE WAS GOING TO GO OVERSEAS?

YES , HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN HIMSELF TOGETHER AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST TOUR OF SHOW BUSINESS. COLONEL PARKER WAS A MARKETING GUY , BUT PARKER WAS PENNY WISE POUND FOOLISH. IF HE WOULD HAVE GONE ON A EUROPEAN TOUR FOR FOUR FIVE MONTHS . HE WOULD HAVE HAD VIDEOS OF ELVIS IN ITALY , GERMANY , FRANCE, SCOTLAND. HE COULD HAVE HAD THREE FOUR LPS OUT OF IT. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY HE WOULD HAD MADE? BUT THE COLONEL WAS AN ILLEGAL ALIEN AND HIS BACK GROUND IS DUBIOUS. HE COULDN'T GET A PASS PORT. HE DID SOMETHING , NO ONE KNOWS.

ONE OF THE PARTS IN YOUR BOOK THAT UPSET ME WAS WHEN YOU SAY ELVIS SAT DOWN AND ATE FIVE BANANA SPLITS. WHAT WAS HE DOING?

THAT WAS SO SHOCKING , WE WERE IN BALTIMORE . GINGER WAS WITH US. WHEN HE ATE THE SECOND ONE I WAS SURPRISED , I MEAN THIS WAS A BIG SPLIT. I COULDN'T HANDLE IT . I WENT TO MY ROOM . I CALLED DOWN STAIRS AND ORDERED ONE , JUST TO SEE. BUT I COULDN'T EVEN FINISH IT. I WAS THINKING WHAT THE HELL WAS HE DOING. IT WAS LIKE SOMETHING DEEP DOWN IN HIM NEW THAT HIS DAYS WERE NUMBERED. HE WANTED TO GET ALL THE ICE CREAMS THAT A LITTLE BOY WAS DEPRIVED. WHEN HE WAS GROWING UP HE WANTED THESE THINGS. I THINK HE WAS TRYING TO GET WHAT EVER HE COULD . ELVIS WAS RUNNING ON TWO PARALLEL TRACKS AT THE SAME TIME. TWO REALITY'S WERE HAPPENING , ONE WAS THIS. I AM ELVIS , I WANT TO LIVE . I WANT TO GET BETTER , I WANT TO GO ON A NEW DIRECTION. I WANT TO BE AN ACTOR , I WANT TO DO ALL THESE THINGS WITH MY LIFE. I WANT TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP. BUT THEN ON THE OTHER TRACK WAS DEATH , THE VOICE OD DOOM. IT WAS ALL THE NEGATIVE THINGS IN HIS LIFE. THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM DID NOT WANT HIM TO CHANGE. THEY WERE AFRAID IF HE CHANGED THEN HE MAY SEE WHAT THEY WERE. HE KNEW IT . HE WOKE UP TO IT. DEATH WAS OVER HIS SHOULDER , BUT WHEN HE SANG UNCHAINED MELODY BY HIMSELF. THAT WAS REMARKABLE , THE LIGHT WAS ON HIM . I KNOW HE WAS SINGING TO HIS MOTHER , SINGING TO DEATH. HE WAS SINGING TO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. IT WAS HIS OWN SECRET.

IT ALWAYS SEEMED THAT WHEN HE GOT BACK ON STAGE HE WAS REVIVED.

YES I SAY THE SAME THING. WE WOULD BE IN THE BACK BEFORE EVERY PERFORMANCE. HE WOULD HAVE ME LAY HANDS ON HIM. DO A LITTLE HEALING TREATMENT , AND I DID IT. HE WALKED UP ON STAGE , HE WOULD PRANCE BACK AND FORTH. HE WOULD BE NODDING AND SAYING HELLO TO PEOPLE. HE WOULD SING A SONG OR TWO AND I WOULD WATCH THE TRANSFORMATION , IT WAS LIKE MAGIC. IT WAS LIKE TEN YEARS WAS OFF OF HIS LIFE. HE LOOKED BEAUTIFUL , RADIANT! CHARGED VITAL! IT WAS REMARKABLE. HE KNEW IT , HE WOULD SAY , MAN WHEN I GET ON THAT STAGE. I GET CHARGED , IT'S LOVE. THEY GIVE ME LOVE AND I GIVE IT BACK TO THEM . THEY JUST FILL ME , MAN I DON'T CARE WHAT EVER DRUG YOU HAD. NOTHING TOUCHES THE HIGH THAT I GET ON STAGE.

I FELT SORRY FOR HIM , IT LOOKED LIKE HE WAS SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING IN GINGER THAT WAS NOT THERE.

OH IT WAS PATHETIC , WE IN BALTIMORE ON ANOTHER TOUR. AFTER THE SHOW , WE WERE ALL SITTING AROUND. GINGER WAS IN THE BEDROOM , JOE AND CHARLIE AND THE STANLEY BOYS WERE ALL THERE. ELVIS SAID ITS GETTING LATE AND LARRY AND I NEED TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING. I WILL SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW , EVERYONE LEFT THE ROOM. ELVIS COMES UP TO ME AND HE SAYS LARRY YOU HAVE TO DO ME A FAVOR. YOU HAVE TO GO IN THE OTHER ROOM , I WILL GO IN WITH YOU AND I WILL GO INTO THE BATHROOM. SIT WITH GINGER AND TELL HER WHO I REALLY AM. TELL HER WHAT MY MISSION IS. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT WHEN HE ASKED ME. TELL THIS WOMAN WHO HE IS? I SAID OF COURSE I WILL ELVIS , SO I DID. YOU KNOW SHE WAS A NICE GIRL , BUT SO YOUNG.

SHE WAS ABOVE HER HEAD.

SHE WAS SO ABOVE HER HEAD SHE WAS SCARED SHITLESS. SHE DIDN'T SAY A WORD , SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY.

SHE COULD SEE HE WAS NOT WELL.

SHE DID. BUT HER MOM WAS LOOKING FOR SOME MONEY , YOU JUST STAY THERE AND BEHAVE YOURSELF. DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS. IN THE SIXTIES I WENT TO THIS RELIGIOUS SCHOOL OUT HERE. CHARLIE HODGE WENT TOO. HE DROPPED OUT AFTER A CERTAIN POINT , BUT I WENT ALL THE WAY. I TOOK A TEST AND THEY ORDAINED ME. MEANING I HAD A LICENSE TO MARRY PEOPLE. I MARRIED ELVIS'S DENTIST , HE ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM AND GINGER . IN MY HEARTS OF HEARTS I KNEW IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN. AT THE END HE WOKE UP TO HER , HE KNEW SHE WAS SEEING HER EX BOYFRIEND.

WELL SHE WAS YOUNG AND WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT ELVIS COULDN'T GIVE HER.

.HE COULDN'T DO IT ANYMORE BECAUSE OF ALL THE PILLS HE WAS ON. THANK GOD , BECAUSE IF SHE WOULD HAVE HAD A KID.

LARRY WHAT DID YOU THINK OF VERNON?

VERNON , WELL IF YOU WERE MAKING A MOVIE AND YOU NEEDED TO BRING AN ACTOR IN. YOU CALL THE ACTORS GILD AND THEY SEND YOU VERNON. (LAUGHING) HE HAD THE MOLASSES DRAWL, AND HE WASN'T VERY BRIGHT. BUT HE WAS OK , I KIND OF LIKED HIM. I LEARNED TO REALLY CARE FOR HIM AT THE END. AFTER ELVIS DIED HE WOULD CALL ME UP . THAT'S WHEN WE REALLY BONDED , VERNON BROKE DOWN . HE ASKED ME TO GO SIT WITH ELVIS AT THE MORTUARY . HE WOULD WANT YOU TO BE THERE. YOU NEED TO DO IS HAIR. THE NEXT DAY WAS THE DAY OF THE FUNERAL ,IT WAS LIKE TWENTIES MINUTES BEFORE. RIGHT OFF THE KITCHEN IS THIS LITTLE ROOM. THE HOUSE IS FULL OF PEOPLE , I SAW VERNON SITTING BY HIMSELF ON THE BED. HE SAW AND MOTIONED FOR ME TO COME IN . LARRY SIT NEXT TO ME , I HAVE TO TELL YOU SOMETHING . I ADMIT IT , WHEN YOU FIRST CAME HERE YEARS AGO I WAS SUSPICIOUS OF YOU . IT TOOK ME MANY YEARS TO REALIZE THE TRUTH .

LARRY WHAT DID ELVIS THINK OF THE HOLIDAYS?

THE HOLIDAYS WERE SO SPECIAL TO HIM , ELVIS WOULD SAY ITS AMAZING , THERE IS SO MANY PEOPLE IN MY HOUSE AND I DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE. I KNOW WHY THEY ARE HERE

BUT DON'T YOU THINK THAT TOOK IT'S TOLL ON ELVIS?

BUT HE UNDERSTOOD IT , I REMEMBER ONE TIME WE WERE ON TOUR , IN THOSE DAYS IT WAS FIFTEEN DOLLARS TO SEE HIM IN CONCERT. THEY TOLD ELVIS THAT THEY WERE GOING TO RAISE THE PRICE OF THE TICKETS. MEANING ELVIS WAS GOING TO MAKE MORE MONEY , ELVIS SAID NO THEY ARE NOT! not if i have anything to say about it. i know how hard it is out there , i know what its like to struggle , i will never ever forget . its tough out there , my fans they don't make a lot of money , they save up to come to one of my shows. he understood people and if can make them happy by giving them a little money , then i will make them happy. what hurt him was the people who pretended to be his friends. that's what hurt him.

elvis loved two  holidays , christmas , thanksgiving , he gave money and wrote checks every year . plus everyday gifts would come to graceland. there would be a lot of teddy bears and they would store them in the attic . elvis would have them taken down to the children's hospital. elvis loved christmas , always had a big meal for thanks giving , plus he was always home for thanks giving . always had a nice meal and family and the guys would sit around , it was beautiful. he also liked the forth of july , he was patriotic , he believed in his country. he would have the guys go out and buy five hundred dollars worth of fireworks. we would choose up sides , and we got into some pretty heavy duty fights. we would have to put masks on our face because it was dangerous. we got into it , but it was cool.

there was another part in your book that upset me. when you say he asked someone to go get him a girl.

yeah , well here's the deal . we were in Binghamton new york . this is when he sent ginger home on a plane , they had gotten into a big fight. he said every time i come to talk to you your on the phone with your mother. she is telling you what to do with me , and she is directing everything and i don't like it. you better think twice girl and he sent her home. so that night , it was the first time he was alone in a long time . so I'm in the room with him , larry what am i going to do. let me tell you joe , while we were talking . I'm in Elvis's room with my minds eye. i can see elvis and i can see the bed. he said call joe , so i called joe . joe said what's up ? he said to joe that he couldn't sleep , he needed someone in the bed with him. he told joe to call the coast . joe said i can't elvis its to late. by the time they got here it would be ten o clock in the morning ! let me work on it. that's when i came up with the idea of kathy westmorland , which worked out beautifully.

she understood?

totally , it was so funny because i saw her the other day and she thought i had called her up to hit on her. (laughing) i said kathy I'm with elvis he really needs you to stay with him tonight and i will meet you in the elevator. after i hung up elvis said to me explain to her that this is not sexual i just need her next to me. so i went to the elevator and a couple of cops were standing there and the door opens and there's kathy in her night gown . i take her by the hand and when i walked away i turned back and the cop winked. they figured she was going to my room.

larry can you tell me about august 16 1977?

August 16, 1977 is branded on my heart and soul forever.   In the early hours of that morning  I was sitting downstairs at Graceland, when Elvis called me on the phone from his bedroom.  He had come home from the dentist shortly before that, not looking at all well, and had gone upstairs immediately.  Funny thing is, after all the years I had known him, since 1964,  I never heard his voice so soft, so melodic and sounding so young as on that call.  I had been very concerned over his health, especially after seeing him earlier, but his tone and his attitude made me feel a bit more at ease.

Elvis asked me to come upstairs because we had so much to talk about.  I suggested, since it was so late and he needed his rest, that we would have plenty of time to talk during the upcoming tour.  I told him that I brought some new books that he wanted and I said I would bring them over next day.  We had a very playful conversation, both of us laughing, until it was time to say goodnight.  The last thing Elvis said to me was, "Remember, Larry; angels fly because they take themselves to lightly."

A few minutes after I went back to my room at Howard Johnson's down the road, Elvis called.  He changed his mind and he wanted the books right away.  He sent one of the guys over to pick up the books, so I wouldn't have to go out again.

The next afternoon, when Elvis' body was found lying on the floor, the book I had brought for him was held closely to his chest.  It's entitled The Scientific Search For The Face Of Jesus, concerning what's known as
The Holy Shroud.

Larry what are you doing now?

LG - I'm working on a new book that I originally discussed with Elvis. I was going to do a Health & Hair care book and at the time Elvis said that I could use his name on the book. He was very happy to be associated with health and thought that it would be good for his image. He even discussed being in a commercial for me! Elvis had talked about it with Vernon, but Elvis died before any contracts were signed and then I felt I couldn't go through with it. But I'm doing it now and I have revamped it. I will talk all about my early years with Elvis and all the celebrities. The book is called, 'GellerCare: Healthy Hair, Healthy Life' and is all about life & rejuvenation, nutrition and spiritual growth and everything you need to know about hair. It should be coming out early next year and there'll be photos from every movie that I made with Elvis.
